MADRID, December 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Kremlin on Tuesday rejected a gamble on a Christmas truce in Ukraine, saying it would serve to strengthen the other side, in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s demand to stop fighting over the holidays.
“We want peace, not a truce that gives Ukraine a respite to prepare and continue the war,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who stressed that Russia would continue as before.
“We want to end this conflict, achieve our goals, protect our interests and ensure peace in Europe. This is what we want,” said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
Peskov noted that Russia’s position is “consistent” and “well known” to both the Ukrainian and American sides and that they will not submit to “decisions that are unsustainable in the short term.”
The Kremlin spokesperson thus responds to the German Chancellor’s call to Putin to declare a truce for Christmas, taking advantage of the presence these days of the Ukrainian and American delegations in Berlin to negotiate the peace plan proposed by the administration of Donald Trump.
