A feminist association announced on Tuesday (December 16, 2025) a public insult complaint against Brigitte Macron, the French president’s wife, who called activists who interrupted the show of a comedian accused of sexual assault “stupid bitches.”
Her words sparked outrage among feminist, left-wing and cultural groups, with numerous actresses like Marion Cotillard expressing support for victims of sexual assault.
The feminist association Les Tricoteuses hystériques filed a complaint “on behalf of 343 women and associations who declare themselves collectively and individually affected by these statements.”
According to the text of the complaint consulted by AFP, Brigitte Macron’s statements on December 7 “could constitute the crime of public insult.”
President Emmanuel Macron’s wife called the feminists of the #NousToutes collective, who interrupted the show of actor and comedian Ary Abittan on December 6, “stupid bitches”.
In 2021, a young woman accused Abittan of rape, but after three years of investigation, the court closed the case due to lack of evidence. But feminist groups questioned her return to the stage with protests near the rooms where she performs.
She’s not sorry
In her first reaction to the controversy, Brigitte Macron said in an interview with the media on Monday Brutally that he regretted if his words had hurt “the female victims,” but clarified that they were spoken “in private” and that he had no regrets.
France has been rocked in recent years by a series of rape and sexual assault allegations against well-known personalities in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
Actor Gérard Depardieu was convicted in May of sexually assaulting two women in a film shot in 2021, which he denies.
Emmanuel Macron expressed his admiration for Depardieu in 2023, stating at the time that the actor was the subject of a “witch hunt” and that he defended the presumption of innocence.
