Influencer Laís Caldas was surprised when she revealed the reason for her pregnancy. In a report posted on social media this Tuesday (16/12), she said that the pregnancy of her firstborn was unplanned and occurred while she was using the contraceptive pill — which lost its effect due to the use of tirzepatide-based weight loss pens, particularly mounjaro.
Laís said she started using the drug for weight loss during preparations for her wedding, which took place in September this year. This wasn’t the first time the ex-BBB member used medication to lose weight. In 2024, she carried out a similar protocol.
“I was taking birth control pills and nothing happened. Then you say, ‘Oh, that’s not going to happen to me’. God was just waiting for our marriage to bless us with this son or daughter. There’s no other explanation, is there, guys?” joked the wife of former BBB member Gustavo Marsengo.
How weight loss pens interfere with contraceptives
Doctor Iago Batista, a graduate in endocrinology and metabolism, explains that cases of unplanned pregnancies during weight loss treatment are not rare. This is because the medication reduces the speed of gastric emptying, meaning it takes longer for the stomach to release its contents into the intestine, where the contraceptive is absorbed.
“The absorption of the hormone can be irregular, especially at the start of treatment or during dose increases. This effect is described in the package insert for weight loss pens and is the main mechanism that can then reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, which increases the risk of unplanned pregnancy,” warns Iago.
