San Jose, December 14 (EFE). – The President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, congratulated the Chilean candidate and celebrated the victory of the far-right José Antonio Kast in the second round of presidential elections that took place this Sunday in the South American country.
“I extend my sincerest congratulations to the people of Chile for holding the second round of presidential elections in a peaceful, democratic and transparent manner. I also congratulate the elected President José Antonio Kast. I hope that we can strengthen friendship and bilateral relations for common progress with Chile,” he wrote in X.
Kast won the Chilean presidential election this Sunday, defeating by a wide margin the leftist Jeannette Jara, former labor minister under current President Gabriel Boric, with more than 99% of the votes counted.
According to preliminary data from the Electoral Service (Servel), the 59-year-old ultra-Catholic former MP received 58.18% of the vote, compared to 41.82% for Boric’s 51-year-old former minister.
The elected president, who supported the continuity of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) in the 1988 popular vote, is the first Pinochetista to reach La Moneda since the return to democracy. EFE
