The former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) Silvinei Vasques, sentenced this Tuesday (16/12) by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to 24 years and 6 months in prison for participation in the coup attempt, requested the dismissal from the position of Secretary of Economic Development and Innovation of São José, in Greater Florianópolis (SC).
Vasques has been at the head of the department since January of this year, when he was appointed by Mayor Orvino Coelho of Ávila (PSD). The request for dismissal was filed on Tuesday, the same day the STF concluded the trial of the core 2 defendants of the coup plot.
The departure was confirmed by the town hall in an official note. For the moment, the municipality has not announced who will take charge of the secretariat.
“The Municipality of São José informs that Silvinei Vasques has requested his resignation from the position of Secretary of Economic Development and Innovation. The Municipality is grateful for the contribution made during the period in which he was at the Municipality,” the statement said.

Trial and conviction
In the trial conducted by the First College of the STF, Silvinei Vasques received the second highest sentence among the group 2 convicts, behind Army Reserve General Mário Fernandes, identified by ministers as the central figure of the indicted group.
Three other defendants from the group were also sentenced: Filipe Garcia Martins Pereira, former international advisor to the Presidency of the Republic; Marcelo Costa Câmara, Army reserve colonel and former advisor to the Presidency; and Marília Ferreira de Alencar, delegate and former director of intelligence of the federal police.
The magistrates of the Supreme Court also voted to acquit Fernando de Sousa Oliveira, delegate of the federal police.
Former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), Vasques was found guilty of interference in the second round of the 2022 presidential election. According to the complaint from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), he ordered blitzes and blockades in regions where the then candidate, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), had obtained a better electoral result in the first round.
According to the prosecution, these actions were intended to make it difficult for voters to travel to polling locations. Vasques’ defense denies the accusations and says it will appeal the decision.
