Burgos City Hall has presented allegations against the electricity planning of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Miteco) for 2030 to request a greater supply of electricity distribution for the city, whose networks are above 94 percent saturation, … which endangers the expansion and installation of new businesses in Burgos.
The mayor, Cristina Ayala, assures that several business projects are threatened due to the lack of guarantee of a sufficient supply of electricity: “They are blocked”. In Castile and León, it is estimated that the lack of electricity capacity could jeopardize investments worth around 15 billion euros in the coming years. The mayor insists that this is not a political or localist position, of competition with other regions of Spain, but rather “a request for realistic and effective planning”.
The main argument is the need to take into account the strong energy production capacity of Burgos and Castilla y León, particularly in renewable energy, where the province of Burgos contributes 25 percent of regional production, which is the largest of the autonomous communities in Spain.
The other factor to consider is the high degree of industrialization of Burgos, the highest in the community and one of the highest per capita in the country. In this sense, it highlights the lack of balance between the level of renewable energy production, with Burgos in first place, and second in Spain in terms of wind production. Also, distribution, with significant deficiencies that limit industrial growth, which is particularly important for the industrial development of Burgos, which has several important and relevant industries and a technological park about to enter into service.
For this reason, the allegations raise the need to install two transformers in two electrical nodes near the capital Burgos and the expansion of energy available in Puentelarrá, near Miranda de Ebro, and in Cotorros, near Melgar de Fernamental.
The mayor insists on the need to double Miteco’s investments in the electricity transmission and distribution network. Currently, the annual investment forecast is 3 billion. However, the needs studies prepared by the ministry conclude that around 6 billion euros per year would need to be invested. Ayala clarifies that the Burgos City Council decided to present allegations to avoid planning that stifles the future of the city and the contribution to the economy of the province, of Castilla y León and of Spain.
