The strike called for this Wednesday (December 17, 2025) by employees of several airlines and ground service companies operating at Italy’s main airports will result in the cancellation of dozens of flights and possible delays.
The sector’s unions have called for a four-hour strike starting from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., which brought together flight crews from Vueling and EasyJet, ground staff from Air France and KLM, and employees from national airline ITA Airways. Employees of ground handling companies affiliated with Assohandlers that operate at Italian airports are also affected.
“It will be a complicated Wednesday for airline passengers,” summarizes the newspaper Corriere della Sera, quoting a statement from the unions: “A meeting of 800 workers, both in person and via live broadcast, confirmed the validity of the demands supporting the strike.”
First strike at ITA Airways after Lufthansa’s entry
In the case of ITA Airways, this is the first strike since joining the Lufthansa group, which has a 41% stake, and it has been reported that 72 domestic and international flights have been canceled so far. The company’s employees are protesting for a pay rise, improved conditions and an industrial plan “with greater investment in the fleet”.
In the case of Vueling, the protest cites, among other things, “the company’s lack of transparency in the systematic use of foreign personnel on Italian territory” and the 80 announced layoffs, as well as the fact that the company has announced that it will close its base at Rome Fiumicino airport.
