The British government confirmed on Wednesday (17/12/2025) that it has “successfully agreed on the terms and conditions for the resumption in 2027 of the Erasmus program”, the European student exchange program from which it withdrew in 2020 as part of the Brexit agreement but which it is now returning to in order to strengthen relations with the European Union.
In a statement, Employment Director Keir Starmer noted that this program, called Erasmus+, will expand opportunities for young people of all backgrounds, students and education, youth and sports staff to study and train abroad. This is what the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on the social network This is “a step forward” in the “strategic partnership” between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
An “important victory for our youth”
“Joining Erasmus+ is an important victory for our young people, removing barriers and broadening horizons so that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to study and train abroad,” said British Minister for Relations with the European Union Nick Thomas-Symonds.
Strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union continue to benefit British citizens with measures that support jobs, bills and borders, the government said. This agreement is part of Starmer’s reinvigoration of relations with the EU since he took office in July 2024, after years of Brexit-related tensions between the 27-country European body and previous Conservative governments.
