The family of the poet and intellectual Eugenio Padorno, adopted son from the island of Gran Canaria, announced the death of the man who was a key figure in the literature and thought of the Canary Islands.
This was stated by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria in a press release. … in which he expressed the deep regret of the entire island society for the loss of the writer, poet, literary critic, editor and teacher. He has been a member of the Canarian Language Academy since 2002.
“He is one of the contemporary intellectuals of Gran Canaria who has most studied the particularity of the island from a humanist perspective, with particular attention to literary and artistic manifestations. And as a teacher, he has taught several generations of Canarians since 1968,” highlighted the president of the island, Antonio Morales.
He also added that for more than five decades, through his poetic work and his essays, Padorno “has forged a true Canary theory from a cultural point of view, complementary to what Manuel Alemán formulated in the field of psychosociology.”
“Another element that has contributed is the search for a cultural, literary and artistic essentiality in the Canarian landscape, as well as the definition of island spirituality, with traits such as humility, simplicity, immigration or historical depth, in addition to the mythical and existentialist redimension of the concept of the island, he also reflected and the redefinition of Canarian literature with exclusive and distinctive traits,” concluded Morales.
