“The purpose of establishing the designation of origin “Serra do Rio” is not only to provide legal protection against the abusive use of the designation by external producers, but also to promote regional economic development, encouraging wine tourism, family farming and job creation. In addition, this contributes to inserting Rio de Janeiro wines on the national and international scene, giving them greater credibility and competitiveness in consumer markets,” said declared Amorim.
The objective of the label is to promote and protect the identity of Serra Fluminense wine products; encourage good agricultural and industrial practices in regional winemaking; stimulate the economic, social and tourist development of the region; and assure consumers of the origin, authenticity and quality of certified products.
Rural producers, wineries, cooperatives and associations with headquarters and/or proven operations in the municipalities belonging to Serra Fluminense can request the use of the name. The municipalities included are: Bom Jardim, Cantagalo, Carmo, Cordeiro, Duas Barras, Macuco, Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis, Santa Maria Madalena, São José do Vale do Rio Preto, São Sebastião do Alto, Sumidouro, Teresópolis, Trajano de Moraes, Cachoeiras de Macacu, Guapimirim, Areal, Comendador Levy Gasparian, Engenheiro Paulo de Frontin, Mendes, Miguel Pereira, Paraíba do Sul, Paty do Alferes, Sapucaia, Três Rios, Vassouras and others who can be recognized as an integral part of the mountain wine region.
What will control and regulation look like?
The State Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Supply will be responsible for the following tasks: management, regulation, control and inspection of the designation of origin. The organization can establish partnerships with the National Company for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Emater) and the Agricultural Research Company of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Pesagro).
Partnerships can also be established with certification bodies, cooperatives and producer associations; in addition to federal bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) and the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), aiming for future protection by geographical indication.
Partnerships can also be used to raise awareness, in airports across the country, of the wine tourism potential of Serra Fluminense. The text also allows the National Development Agency (AgeRio) to create special credit lines for the installation and/or expansion of projects associated with this designation of origin. Anyone using “Serra do Rio” inappropriately is subject to penalties and fines.
