Bolsonaro’s parliamentarians criticized this Thursday the dismissal of Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) by the Chamber of Deputies. The decisions were taken by the Board of Directors, through administrative acts signed by the President of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and other members of the leadership, without a vote in plenary, and published in an additional edition of the Official Journal of the Chamber.
The leader of the PL, Sóstenes Cavalcante, was informed of the decision and criticized the result. In a social media post, he said it was a “serious decision, which we deeply regret and which represents a new step in the vacuum of Parliament’s sovereignty.”
“Millions of Brazilians who entrusted their votes to Eduardo Bolsonaro and Delegado Ramagem are today without representation. This reveals the distortion of the Brazilian democratic system, in which judicial and administrative decisions have begun to take precedence over the popular vote,” Sóstenes wrote.
Federal deputy Mário Frias (PL-SP) declared that the dismissal of the Bolsonaristas constitutes “another dark and shameful chapter of our already weakened relative democracy”.
“A nebulous, cowardly and arbitrary act that shames the institutional history of the country,” Frias said.
Senator and PL pre-candidate for the 2026 presidency, Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), criticized the impeachment and said that “there is a lack of common sense and courage” in Parliament.
“It is a mistake to remove the mandates of deputies Eduardo Bolsonaro and Alexandre Ramagem! They are not leaving Brazil because they want to, but because of the bizarre system of persecution in force in Brazil – which can be described as anything but total democracy,” Flávio wrote.
In the case of Eduardo Bolsonaro, the Council declared the loss of his mandate on the basis of article 55 of the Constitution. The decision specifies that the deputy lost his position “for not having attended, during the current legislative session, a third of the deliberative sessions of the Chamber of Deputies”, which authorizes automatic dismissal due to an administrative act.
The parliamentarian has been abroad for months and is under investigation by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for trying to coerce the judiciary and for having imposed sanctions in the United States against Brazilian authorities, including ministers of the Court.
With this decision, the substitute missionary José Olímpio (PL-SP) assumes the vacant position.
Alexandre Ramagem, on the other hand, had his mandate revoked following his conviction as part of the investigation process into the coup attempt and after the STF determined that he would be revoked by decision of the Chamber Council.
With this decision, Dr. Flávio (PL-RJ), current Secretary of the Government of Rio de Janeiro, will assume the presidency.
Former director general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Ramagem was sentenced to 16 years in prison, following a closed-door procedure, which made it impossible to exercise his parliamentary mandate.
