Reuters, The Guardian, Clarín and El País highlight changes in sentencing rules, possible reduction in sentences and debate over Lula’s veto
The approval of Dosimetry invoice by the Senate this Wednesday the 17th, placed the Brazilian Congress on the radar of the international press. Shortly after the senators’ approval, foreign newspapers began reporting on the change in sentencing rules and highlighting the impacts of the proposal on the legal situation of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The Reuters news agency recalled the coups of January 8, 2023, drawing a parallel with the invasion of the Capitol in Washington in 2021. In the report, the agency explains that the approved text reduces the sanctions provided for convictions for attempted coup d’état, which could benefit the defendants involved in the attacks against the headquarters of the Three Powers.
The British newspaper The Guardian highlighted the declaration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that he intends to veto the PL Dosimetry. The vehicle also explained the result of the vote in the Senate and the effects that the proposal could produce if it were sanctioned.
The Argentinian Clarín highlighted the approval of the project by the Senate and its possible effects in the event of presidential sanction. According to the newspaper, there is no consensus on the actual length of time Bolsonaro will serve his sentence if the text comes into force. The report also cites a publication by the national president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, on the social network X, in which she declares that Lula will veto the proposal.
The Spanish daily El País believes that Congress’s decision to reduce the former president’s sentences would aim to “neutralize the pressure from the Bolsonaro family” for the approval of an amnesty. The newspaper also points out that left-wing parties will likely question the constitutionality of the law by Federal Court (STF).
