
The private plane that crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina (United States) was carrying former Nascar driver Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina and their children Emma, 14, and Ryder, 6. They all died in the accident which occurred this Thursday (12/18).
“The NASCAR family is devastated by the loss of Greg Biffle, who was one of our 75 greatest drivers and was known for his tireless humanitarian work after his career. We offer our deepest condolences,” the main American motorsport series published.
Seven people were on board the plane, a Cessna C550. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, which are still unknown.

Witnesses recorded video of a massive fire after impact, with a column of smoke visible in the distance. Flight tracking data indicates the plane returned to the airport shortly after takeoff. The plane had previously flown from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Statesville.
Greg Biffle has had a successful career in American motorsport. Champion of the Busch Series in 2002, a Nascar access category, he accumulated 19 victories in the Nascar Cup between 2003 and 2016. After leaving the regular calendar, he only made occasional appearances, the last in 2022.
