Porto qualified for the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup by beating Famalicão 4-1 this Thursday (18), at the Estádio do Dragão. William Gomes, ex-São Paulo, Victor Froholdt, Samu Aghehowa and Pepê scored for the hosts, and Justin de Haas scored for the visitors.
With the result in hand, the Blue and White will face none other than Benfica in a decisive classic that counts for a place in the semi-finals. Famalicão, for his part, says goodbye to the competition.
For the Portuguese Championship, Porto will return to the field against Alverca for the 15th round, on December 22, at 3:45 p.m. (Brasilia time). The same day, but at 5:45 p.m., Famalicão faces Benfica.
The game
The home side pressed from the start and after six minutes they opened the scoring with ex-São Paulo William Gomes taking advantage of a defensive error after Victor Froholdt’s pressure and finishing firmly against Ivan Zlobin. Famalicão reacted quickly and, in the 13th minute, De Haas took advantage of a corner to rise above the defense and head the equalizer. Still in the first half, in the 38th minute, Froholdt gave Porto the lead again by taking advantage of the goalkeeper’s rebound after Gabri Veiga’s shot and pushing it into the net.
In the complementary phase, Porto’s dominance was consolidated. In the 35th minute, Samu Aghehowa, who had just come on, headed home the team’s third goal, virtually sealing qualification. Shortly after, in the 44th minute, Pepê also completed the rout from above and confirmed the 4-1 victory.
Sporting also progresses in the Portuguese Cup
Current champion of the Portuguese Cup, Sporting has also ensured its presence in the next phase. After all, they beat Santa Clara 3-2 away in a duel that aroused strong emotions until the last minutes. The Lions will face AVS, who surprised by eliminating Vitória de Guimarães with a 1-0 away victory.
