The prevention of everyday digital crime and raising awareness of security practices are the focus of the work of a research group National Technical Universityl (UTN) Cordova, consisting of engineers, teachers and students. Far from developing its own product, the initiative focuses on analyzing accessible technologies, testing them and disseminating their use as another layer of protection for citizens.

“We haven’t evolved UTN. “We are not developing a product,” he made it clear from the start. Fabian Gibellini, Systems engineer and director of the information systems security and cybersecurity research group, GISSICspecializing in information systems security and cybersecurity. “What we do is awareness in terms of security precautions, taking into account people’s daily problems,” he explained.
In this context, the group analyzed the use of protective covers RFID, an accessory that blocks the communication of contactless cards through the effect known as ““Faraday cage”. “What these covers generate is a complete lack of communication between the card and a reader, B. bring a collection device or a cell phone NFC“, he explained Gibellini.

To check functionality, the team carried out various technical tests. “The We have tried commercial collection devices, with cell phones that have NFC and also with Flipper Zero, This is a device commonly used in hacking. In all cases the results were satisfactory. Works very well“, he explained.
The engineer explained that the main goal is not technological innovation, but sAdd an extra layer of protection against crime that grows in public spaces. “Today, a person could board a bus with a small charger, approach a wallet and make a transaction without the owner noticing,” he warned. “What you do in this case is add another layer of security, for example, if you enable double factor authentication.”

The choice of this device was directly related to its cost. “We were looking for cost-effective technologies, accessible to everyone. “These covers are on the market, we do not develop them,” he emphasized. In his opinion, they can be found on the local market for around 100 euros 2,000 pesoswhile their unit value drops significantly when purchased in large quantities.

The initiative was conducted primarily within the university community, using academic events and student conferences. “We distributed them at national conferences and cybersecurity competitions attended by more than 700 students. There we also show how they work and why they are useful,” he noted.

The group emphasizes this Consciousness is the central axis of all his actions. “This isn’t just technology. It teaches people to take care of themselves, understand the risks and incorporate safety habits into daily life,” he said. Gibellini. And he concluded: “If a solution is cheap, works and helps prevent, we believe it is worth disseminating.”
