The Diocese of Santo Tome reported that a malfunction occurred Thursday morning due to the dislodgement of the pipe supplying water to the air conditioner, although El Greco’s painting “The Burial of the Lord of Orgas” was not damaged.
The event was held outside the exhibition space, in the technical area where the air conditioning equipment is located. At 6:00 am, the fire and security alarms were activated simultaneously, allowing the fault to be detected immediately thanks to automatic calls from the alarm centers. Water ran down the wall into the closet area, affecting only the floor and ancillary elements of the space.
El Greco’s painting “The Burial of the Master of Orgaz” is in excellent condition, the archbishop said in a press release. They say that the work has suffered no damage, was not compromised at any time, and remains guarded in a completely normal condition.
The room in which the painting is displayed has independent security systems with fire detection, access control and alarms to provide maximum protection. These systems guarantee a degree of static and dynamic security “at the maximum level determined by current regulations”, ensuring comprehensive protection of the work in any conditions.
He was not in danger at any time.
Furthermore, it should be noted that there are no pipes or channels in the aforementioned space that could cause water accidents, and therefore the painting was not affected and was not exposed to danger “at any time.”
From the first moment, the emergency plan was activated and measures were taken in a “coordinated manner” to resolve the incident. The company responsible for maintenance was notified, which postponed its entry to ensure that the parish could open normally before 10:00 am. The electrical installation was also checked with the usual technician and the IT company was informed to reinstall the computer systems that were partially affected by the water.
The Diocese of Santo Tome confirms that the situation is “under complete control,” and it has opened its doors normally and maintained its usual visiting hours.
