This Saturday, the United States intercepted and neutralized an oil tanker in international waters, off the coast of Venezuela. This is the second after a similar operation on December 10. The information, provided by Reuters, was confirmed by three US officials.
The news comes after President Donald Trump this week announced a “total and complete blockade” of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and selling to the South American country. With this announcement, the Republican removed the doubts that could be expressed about Washington’s interest in Venezuelan oil as part of the offensive against the government of Nicolas Maduro, which he justified solely as a war against drug trafficking and which had already overcome a hundred years of extrajudicial executions of crew members of so-called narco-boats.
The information provided this Saturday by American employees does not specify the location of operation; neither does the name of the boat. They only learned that the Guardia Costera was under command.
Since the US military, with fanfare like an action movie, last week seized Skipper, a sanctioned oil tanker on the Venezuelan coast, a de facto embargo has been imposed on trade in Caracas. Many boats loaded with barrels of oil remain in Venezuelan waters without risking going to sea and without being in danger.
