Arsenal will spend Christmas top of the Premier League. After all, this Saturday (20), the London team beat Everton 1-0, away, and regained the lead in the competition after the 17th day. The only goal of the match was scored by striker Gyökeres, from the penalty spot.
The result puts Arsenal at the top of the English Championship, now with 39 points, leaving the Manchester City – who also beat Sunderland 3-0 this Saturday – behind, with 37. Everton, in turn, remains tenth, with 24.
The two teams will not return to the pitch until after Christmas. On Saturday (27), the Gunners welcome Brighton to the Emirates at 12 p.m. (Brasilia time), at the same time as Burnley x Everton.
Arsenal dominated the match in the first half, with more possession and presence on the offensive pitch. Despite this, few effective scoring chances were created. On the other hand, Everton faced many difficulties against the Gunners. So much so that he spent the first 45 without finishing on Raya’s goal.
A previously unassuming game led to Arsenal’s goal. After a corner, O’Brien touches the ball and, after consulting the VAR, the referee awards a penalty. Gyökeres struck well and scored his fifth Premier League goal, the seventh of the season.
Arsenal continue with more volume in the second half
The second half started with Arsenal in the lead, missing a good chance with Saka, who the defense cleared almost over the line. Everton, in turn, began to appear more in attack and finished for the first time with Alcaraz, ex-Flamengo, but the ball went out. In another move, the Toffees called for a penalty, which was ignored by the referee.
Despite Everton’s slight progress, it was the Gunners who almost scored. In a good attack, Rice left space for Trossard to beat. The ball capriciously hits the post. With the next blow, Odegaard received it on the right and fell back. Zubimendi finished and also hit the post.
Mikel Arteta started Gabriel Jesus and Martinelli in the second half, to give the attack a boost. The center forward was more participatory than Gyökeres, also helping to build plays. In the end, Tarkowski almost scored against the second for Arsenal, who came away with the victory to guarantee another round in the lead.
