The fact that the names of Donald Trump and Bill Clinton appear in the Jeffrey Epstein case documents neither attracts attention nor surprises. Leaving aside what the United States judiciary will eventually condemn, two situations combining sex and scandal weigh on these two North American presidents, who have in common the fact that they have held the office twice.
In Clinton’s case, it was the affair with Monica Lewinsky, a young intern – of age – who had sex with the president and is remembered, for example, by a Gap denim dress with Clinton’s sperm on it; his penchant for moistening the cigars by touching them to a certain intimate part of Lewinsky; and impeachment.
Trump, for his part, lost a lawsuit over a payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election so that she wouldn’t reveal the details of an alleged sexual encounter between the two. Likewise, without conviction, the photos of Trump and Clinton that make up the Epstein case files are, for now, placed on the same level as the photos of other celebrities, businessmen and others. In fact, there is a second look at how and who distributes the publication of those images that people chose or decided to show with Epstein.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
Each other. Among the images released a few hours ago, there is one that has had the greatest impact and it is the image that shows a very relaxed Bill Clinton in a hot tub, along with a woman whose face is covered with the black rectangle used to protect identity. And in another, he sits on a private plane with another young blonde, also anonymous, on his lap. Against this background, Ángel Ureña, spokesman for the former President of the United States, assured that Clinton is not connected to the child trafficking network led by Jeffrey Epstein and that the abundance of the above-mentioned photos in the documents declassified by the Justice Department is nothing more than a ploy by Donald Trump, a friend of Epstein, to divert attention. “The White House wasn’t hiding these files for months just to release them on a Friday night to protect Bill Clinton – it’s about protecting themselves from what’s next or what they’re trying to hide forever,” Ureña said. “They can publish all the grainy photos from over twenty years ago that they want, but this matter is not about Bill Clinton. He never did it and never will. (…) In this case, there are two kinds of people: the first group knew nothing and broke up with Epstein before his crimes came to light, and the second group continued their relationship with him afterward. We are in the first. No attempt at delay by the second group will change this. Everyone, especially the MAGAs, expects answers, none Scapegoats.”
Expression. During the election campaign, Trump promised to release all files. As president, however, he dismissed these calls for transparency as a “democratic joke.” He eventually gave in to pressure from Congress, including his Republican Party, and on November 19 passed a law requiring the materials to be published within thirty days. This period ended on the night of December 19th. Todd Blanche, a prosecutor in the Epstein case, noted that “several hundred thousand” more documents are expected to appear “in the coming weeks.” He also clarified that these documents are partially censored to protect victims.
