In the last century, the São Paulo team won in a penalty shootout marked by an unnecessary charge from Edmundo
The Corinthians and Vasco clash in the decision of the Brazilian Cup at 6 p.m. this Saturday, in what will be the meeting of the two clubs in a final, almost 26 years after the 2000 World Cup, won on penalties by the Corinthians. The match takes place at the Maracanã, the same venue as the duel that won the São Paulo team the title in the last century.
Although today the two men live mired in financial crisis and seek to end an uncomfortable period of national titles, at the time they were the teams to beat.
Vasco entered the dispute as the 1998 Libertadores champions, as determined by Conmebol ahead of the 1999 final, which would be won by Palmeiras against Deportivo Cali. Corinthians were named national champions of the host country, also in 1998, but also won the Brazilian championship in 1999.
In this decision, the São Paulo team was led by Oswaldo de Oliveira, who had a strong squad and who started the match with Dida; Índio, Adílson, Fábio Luciano and Kléber; Freddy Rincón, Vampeta, Ricardinho and Marcelinho Carioca; Edilson and Luizao.
Just as today’s Dorival Júnior team has important players trained at the club’s youth level, Oswaldo was part of Terrão’s professional team with names like Fernando Baiano, Edu Gaspar and Gilmar Fubá, coming on in the second half at the Maracanã.
Edu and Fernando even converted penalties in the penalty shootout after a goalless draw in normal time, in a display of personality similar to that shown by Breno Bidon when converting the decisive penalty in the semi-final against Cruzeiro.
The last act of the Corinthians’ conquest was a shot from Edmundo on Vasco’s last kick, after Marcelinho Carioca’s save at Hélton. Before, Dida had already avoided a goal from Gilberto.
The Corinthians goalkeeper was therefore the great executioner of a team of stars which had Romário in charge of the attack. Hélton; Paulo Miranda, Odvan, Mauro Galvão and Gilberto; Amaral, Felipe, Juninho Pernambucano and Ramón; Edmundo and Romário were Antônio Lopes’ Vasco team in this match.
Corinthians’ achievement celebrated its 25th anniversary on January 14, 2025, which is why the uniform worn this season is in honor of the world title. During the first match of the Copa do Brasil final, which ended in a goalless draw, Corinthians supporters held up a banner as a sign of provocation towards Vasco supporters: “I am world champion, you didn’t make it”.
