Revealed by Santos, Japanese striker Kazuyoshi Miura, 58, will play his 41st season as a professional footballer. The tireless striker is preparing to compete in the third division of Japanese football.
Known around the world as ‘King Kazu’ (King Kazu, in Portuguese), Miura is set to join Fukushima United on a one-year loan deal, after playing for fourth division side Atlético Suzuka last season.
Last season, Kazu played seven games for Suzuka, a team that ended up being relegated to the regional leagues after finishing second and missing the relegation playoffs. The striker will turn 59 in February.
Kazuyoshi’s career began in Brazil in 1986. Revealed by Santos, he also played for the Brazilian teams of XV de Jaú, interior of São Paulo, Palmeiras and Coritiba.
The player was also in Europe, where he played for Genoa of Italy and Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia. His career with these clubs was fundamental to the popularization of football in Japan, notably with the creation of the J-League in 1993.
For the Japanese national team, Kazu made his debut in 1990 and scored 55 goals in 89 matches. Interestingly, despite his prominent role, he was left out of Japan’s first World Cup appearance, in 1998, in France. He retired from the national team in 2000.
Kazuyoshi has had a career in sports for around 40 years and is only thinking of hanging up his boots at the age of 60.
