MADRID, December 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog warned Sunday of a “global emergency” due to “rising hatred toward Jews” coinciding with commemorations of the 15 killed in the attack a week ago on a Jewish Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia.
“The rise of anti-Jewish hatred around the world is a global emergency. The battle against anti-Semitism should be everyone’s business. This is an urgent call for action to prevent the next catastrophe. We will not tolerate it,” Herzog said in an institutional message during an event in Jerusalem.
To do this, he called on each country to “take severe measures”. “It is necessary for ordinary people to reject lies and prejudice and accept diversity, humanity and truth,” he insisted.
Herzog also spoke of the “heroes” who “came to the rescue” at Bondi Beach in Sydney, the scene of the attack. “They will forever be remembered for their generosity,” he said.
“We are not going to allow hatred to break us. We are not going to allow terror to darken our light, our unity, our community, our mutual responsibility, our eternity,” stressed the Israeli head of state.
Thus, he proposes to “defeat this darkness together”. “Long live the Jewish people. Eternally. Am Yisrael Chai”, the people of Israel live, he proclaimed.
A father and son began shooting at attendees of a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people in what authorities say was an anti-Semitic terrorist attack.
